Urge them to retain the internationally recognized name. And if they MUST kowtow, because capitalism, do so only by adding something like (“Gulf of America” - U.S.) in smaller italic type below it.

Edit the name (once it is changed) and in the meantime, send the feedback that changing the name of an international body of water trafficked by ships from nearly every nation and bordered by the countries of two continents based solely on the political whim of one man does a grave disservice.

I actually looked it up today. Back in the 1970s, this guy declared his own birthday (yep, Jan. 23) to be National Pie Day, and somehow the National Pie Council (yep, there is one) got hold of it and ran with it and here we are.

I reported every one of them as spam (except Donald, I reported his account for hate speech) and then blocked them.

When I was nine, I thought the Steve Miller Band was singing “Vitas Gerulaitis” and didn’t know why he would be carrying anyone anywhere. (1977)

I love it here, I love it there, I love it forever and everywhere.

It takes a little work to share a daily look back from The Other Place, but I think @maryjopehl.bsky.social would agree this was worth it. ❤️

But in my feed today, it’s people for whom that meeting was energizing and motivating and inspiring, or who fought the same fight & were terribly proud of her work & of working with her for something important. Who know what we lost & are claiming the space to keep the fight going.

But the parts that make me yawn and roll my eyes are the parts that go farthest afield and I honestly don’t love the show’s grown-up Kirstin almost as much as I do love its young Kirstin. Anyway. I’m really mixed about it. But the snowy Chicago scenes feel right today.

I’ve read the book at least six times, maybe twice that. I had super mixed feelings about the series. Still do. Parts of it are really compelling. And parts of it I know now to skip through (boredom, not horror). Some of what I love is what’s the same, and I love some of the different too.

I’ve been watching the Quiet Place trilogy. It was that or Station Eleven all over again, and that’s probably still next.

I just posted about this. Nutshell: my son and I wound up helping a homeless neighbor get some warm things, with help from someone else who started off negative about the homeless man & then did some good. It was all only a small thing. But we set those small things like candles against the dark.

So on this day when I feel so bleak and hopeless about what lies ahead, this stranger (who probably could use a hand himself) helped my boy help someone else. This is what it’s going to take. This is what, if anything, will get us through. One day, one help, one person at a time. ✊
