If DDOT doesn't change its course, this same pattern is happening 30 times over on 18th Street in January

It takes so much work and so many years to get new bike and ped infrastructure, with countless public meetings, comment periods, and ANC approvals, but getting more parking can be done in 4 days with no discussion at all

Monday, Thursday, Friday.

Goodbye, space for a dozen people to eat.

Hello, two more free long term parking spaces

best of luck to @cmcharlesallen.bsky.social on his re-election campaign -- the best sustainable transit advocate on the council.

The Tail Up Goat outdoor dining space is now completely gone, and two cars are parked where it used to be. this will probably be the status quo for the foreseeable future because DC officials struggle to think of any other uses for curb space besides private car parking. It's a real shame.

I would believe the Purple Patch space is that big -- roughly 120 feet by 10 feet.

There are also fees for barriers that you'd have to rent from the city on top of the actual streatery fee (and the one time fees for designs and permits)

The question is not "should restaurants get this space for free". The question is "what kind of neighborhood do we want to build, and how do we set the costs and incentives to get there?"

11.11.2025 15:53 β€” πŸ‘ 8    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The city is charging rent, the question is how much. Restaurants say it should be $5 per square foot (the cost for sidewalk cafes). The city has settled on the arbitrary amount of $20 per square foot, even though these are functionally exactly the same as sidewalk cafes.

DC of all places knows a promise for a future vote is worthless. Disappointed that you are OK with this very bad bill

It's ridiculous that the city doesn't see the value of outdoor dining to the community.

DDOT is making the regulations so burdensome that 90% of streateries will close, and even worse, the only thing the city wants to see there is more parking spaces

The Tail Up Goat street dining structure is being taken down this morning. The space will probably revert back to two long term, free parking spaces.

The same will likely be happening all up and down 18th Street in the coming months (though there it will become metered parking)

They're also similar in a wins-above-replacement sense. You could absolutely be more progressive and still win in AZ or PA. Probably not in WV though

It's also part of a broader pattern where due to weird and almost random quirks, some people can run for higher office without risking their current job and others cannot. Sorry wards 1, 3, 5, and 6, you are much less likely to have one of your councilmembers become mayor!

Is there a way to get the board of elections to preemptively issue a ruling on this? Do we have to wait for it to happen and then someone would sue? McDuffie doesn't have the best record when it comes to understanding DC election requirements

No need to write a new melody -- it fits perfectly to martin price singing "hark to the tale of Nelson" in Lemon Of Troy

i wonder if any democratic socialists in DC politics who are thinking about a run for mayor are looking at tonight's results and maybe it's pushing them to go for it

would be a little more convincing if he said he wasn't going to switch parties in the future, but he obviously wants to keep the door open for a ridiculous scheme like this.

The crowds on 18th street today are as huge as any festival I've ever been to in DC. Perhaps we should consider closing 18th street to cars more regularly! Certainly seems good for business.

I would guess that they mean the mobile billboards (ie trucks covered in LCD panels) that political groups love to use and that DC should really ban
