IDEAS How Good Intentions Helped Pave Trump’s Road to Iran Humanitarians proposed a loophole in international law. Decades later, Trump is jumping through it.

Few believe that Mr. Trump is driven by a concern for human rights. He has also made clear his lack of interest in international law. And the war has already been catastrophic for many Iranian civilians, including dozens killed at an elementary school in an apparent U.S. missile strike on a nearby naval base. Yet the invocation of humanitarianism to help justify the war taps into β€” whether the president intends it or not β€” a powerful argument that has reshaped the global order since the end of the Cold War.

Then why write a whole story blaming β€œhumanitarians” for his war?

Egyptian prince Thutmose was entombed with his companion cat Ta-Miu (aka β€œlittle mewer”). Here’s the cat’s sarcophagus ~ the inscription says β€œI myself am placed among the imperishable ones that are in the Sky / For I am Ta-Miu, the Triumphant” (1,500 BC)

It is really weird how this ends with Dan saying that every American should be able to afford to live in a rental home? I mean, I can’t argue that would be a good start, but wow the American dream has sure been downgraded.

(Beartato and Reginald, in a museum, gaze upon the Mona Lisa)

BEARTATO: There it is. The Mona Lisa. The most famous painting in history.
REGINALD: Wow! What's it do?

BEARTATO: It... what?
REGINALD: Why's it famous? What's it do?

(Beartato thinks.)

BEARTATO: I don't know.

REGINALD (to nearly museum employee): Excuse me! Sir? What's it do?

EMPLOYEE: You're the first person to ask! Watch this!

(The employee yanks a pull-string. Mona Lisa's eyes spin around and her mouth opens like a puppet)
MONA LISA: Honk honk! Honk honk!

(Everyone is delighted. This is true art.)

What is this creep even talking about with "The largest issue right now is the algorithmic filter bubble"?

The greatest feature on Bluesky (after the nuclear block and blocklists) is its LACK of a forced algorithm that favors Nazis.

Literally do not understand this.

How are you viewing politics these days?

Super confusing. Everything feels like a mess. The only thing we can do is bring more transparency to how things work, and give access and agency to more and more people. I don't believe one system is going to fix everything, and I don't believe one party is going to fix everything. I've never been on one side or the other.

Still wild to me that if you take the AirTrain from the terminal to pick up a rental car at Federal Circle it's free, but if you take it to the subway or LIRR it costs an ever-increasing amount of money.
