*OK, it wasn’t weird that I found it. I had watched “Bully. Coward. Victim” about Roy Cohen. The kidnapper was arrogant enough to harass the sleaziest lawyer ever. I was doing some research when I found the podcast, but I had had my fill by then.

It’s an important look at a time when gay kids had no safe place to go. Since then, we’ve built a loving, compassionate community. But today, those very places are threatened in so many ways. We must do all we can to keep the doors and hearts open for all our children.

I did listen recently. Afterwards, I needed to assert my truth and wrote the podcasters. I honestly thought I was spewing into the void. I was blown away a half hour later when I received a reply. She had looked at my project, “so many skins, since” and asked if I would record it.

Yikes, I found a podcast about the man who kidnapped me.
Q. What did I do?
A. Put it aside…put it aside for over a year!*

I live in a world of my own. It’s an artist's life.
That’s a privilege not many get to enjoy.
I happily endured its shortcomings in exchange for the astonishing highs.

Of course, there are sorrows. But in measure, as long as I am in progress, I am content.

Are there failures that plague me?
Only the ones I haven’t committed yet.

Have I learned all that I could?
No.
But I have been curious and open, taking in what I can.

No.
But I have worked earnestly and in the belief that I was serving my ambition.

A young friend asked what my relationship with regret is as a 66-year-old man. I was thankful for the prompt to reflect. And grateful to discover what I did.

My challenge while I recover is to plunge ahead without being able to be exact. I hope it will be an exercise in freedom and exploration.

On the surface, my work may not appear precise. In truth, the final constructions are carefully considered. Placement, weight and line are my primary tools. Followed by the more easily managed aspects of surface and color.
