Ignaz Semmelweis proved in 1847 that handwashing cut maternal deaths from 15% to 2%. The medical establishment called him crazy and committed him to an asylum. He died of sepsis. Pasteur later proved he was right.
We call ignoring evidence the Semmelweis Reflex. Still happens today.
