Have done 11 travel baseball seasons (and counting) as dad/coach and umpired a few (plus run the house league teen umpires) and we have seen Some Things. Extremely lucky with parents and coaches over the years. Makes all the difference.

It helps my son is a cheer captain but honestly this team is just so fun to support. Great culture and lots of success. (Baseball won its first state title last year too. I know tons of people there through Little League so that was a real thrill.)

NU women are like $14 GA but getting down there by game time is rough.

I can bite on this apple for hours. Short version: we got my son (now a freshman) into supporting the girls team when he started hoops in fifth grade. Boys got good too in there. Now he goes with my dad, seeks other schools to watch and made himself unofficial team photographer.

At our school $50 gets your family into all home football/basketball all year. Other sports generally free. State series has individual tickets, but still like $7 with fees. And you’re often seeing D1 talent.

This is media literacy. Not “the station owner is a GOP donor” or “the editorial board leans hard left.” So many powerful forces aren’t rooted in electoral politics but too many people are convinced red vs. blue is the only meaningful framing for any debate.

I bit, but recovered by getting purple with the next guess.

Social media (and various entertainment entities) helped me learn when I am the customer and when my attention is the product being sold. More people should consider the distinction.

Not sure of the timeline, but somewhere in the last 20 years there was a shift from developing a cool thing that also might be profitable to working on a startup with the express purposes of either wooing investors or selling to a conglomerate. Or both.

(It may be worth noting I still write four state government columns per week for @shaw-local-news.bsky.social I just don't post links to each one. Still kinda sorting out how I want to fit into social media in 2026, definitely an evolutionary process since I started blogging in 2003!)

It’s senior night (the real one) and I’m making peace with the end of this lane as we near the final exit. But look! My blogging fingers still work.

I have four kids and most of my mental energy is spent on making sure there is food in the house they will consume without complaining. (Even better if they prepare it themselves.)

GA tickets, SeatGeek had for $16 I think. But never been to a game up there, no idea where to park, etc. Settled for one of the best boys’ high school teams on TV (they blew us out at home last night).

Briefly considered going to this game when the day’s plans changed. But sold out and an hour away with only 70 minutes before tip.

Hard agree. Plus, as @sugarazor.bsky.social said earlier, it's not like a lot of modern American radio hits are intelligible, to say nothing of hundreds of years of history of music written without lyrics. How many of the same people watch their kids’ ballet or jazz/hip-hop routines?

They set a school record. The rest of the field posted amazing scores but these kids made their own kind of history. (And beat Stevenson two days in a row, which is always the goal in Libertyville.)

They taught us in grade school that friends are equivalent to both gold and silver. But that was the ‘80s and I haven’t kept up with the markets.

Day two, second year in a row. Some very good teams not in our league today. Kid’s gonna go out on a major high. I’m exuberant. Go Cats!

We have a high school senior and his cheer team is going back to state and if anyone gives me even the most generic compliment about him or the team I will tear up and try to hug someone. If I didn’t have my camera at all times during competitions I might just straight up pass out. Go Cats!

My kid’s heart is set on the university in no small part because of the vibes. We love it up there.
