One of my favourite game balancing stories is the guns in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Players complained the German SMG dealt less damage than the British.

The devs fixed this imbalance by adding more bass to the gunfire sound. The guns had always been of equal power. Just didn't feel like it.
