The Cultural Revolution (or the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution) took place from 1966 to 1976 in China. Mao urged the party to cleanse itself of its ‘class enemies’: ‘capitalists’ such as landowners and shopkeepers, but also artists, farmers and university professors. Often their family members were tainted by association and persecuted. Gangs of students and Red Guards attacked people wearing “bourgeois clothes” on the street. Intellectuals and party officials were murdered or driven to suicide. Schools and universities were closed and churches, shrines, libraries, shops and private homes ransacked or destroyed. China’s economy was violently destroyed. In 2025, F47’s actions are similar. He has used the DOJ to attack institutions of higher education and science research- Harvard and Columbia are examples. New NIH policies are forcing individual recipients and institutions to “certify” that they will not allow DEI related programs of activities. This is a new flavor of authoritarianism.
