Joe admitted to @SteveHullfish that he was sceptical about the idea when Denis Villeneuve suggested it.

But after playing around with it and adding some ADR and VFX (also fun pieces to have for the jigsaw that is this kind of editing puzzle) it worked a treat.

There's so much else to admire in the movie as well. The cast list is studded with familiar names delivering very good performances.

It's a shame that Lori Singer didn't go on to take a lot more roles, although she has excelled at other endeavours too.

John Lithgow is great in a tough role.

I love this title sequence. Simple enough concept but the shots all look great and have plenty of vibrant colours and dynamic movement.

Editor Paul Hirsch had to cut it late in the day and to a tight deadline. Wonderful work.

Correct, it was

Gladiator's Most Iconic Shot Was A Last Minute Addition & Never Planned "I said, ‘Stop right there. Get the Steadicam.’"

Editor Pietro Scalia got the idea whilst watching footage for the ending. And the shot itself was grabbed at the end of principal photography when director Ridley Scott was shooting with Russell Crowe's double and saw him running his hand over the wheat.

Gladiator has a great opening but the addition of the hands on wheat shot (with SFX of kids in the BG) between the opening cards and the battle scene adds intrigue, a hook for later flashbacks and depth to the ending.
