god, i adore how dysfunctional umibozu's family is

overall, sorachi's choice to make his manga about family (by blood or by choice) instead of romantic love is why i love this story so much
it was such a breath of fresh air, back then

like, hijikata was important for what he meant to her earlier in her life, but in the end, he DECIDED to get out of her life, even if it was for her own sake. he chose to stay out of her path, he abandoned her. and she respected that—but at the very end, her final thoughts cannot be for someone>

one thing that makes this scene so memorable for me is that, at the very end, this scene is *not* about hijikata. it's about mitsuba, about her struggles, her knowing this is the end and coming back to edo to say goodbye to her beloved younger brother. to tell him she's proud of him.
