I enjoy reading different genres and trying new things, but am always a sucker for interesting characters, angst, the power of friendship and bittersweet endings. If it made me cry (which isn't very hard to do), it did something very right! At the moment I think my favourite book is Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - the dramatic finale to the Six of Crows duology! “Hey, Ren?” Ren turned to look at him, and Goro took his chance. He launched the water he had gathered in his arms up toward Ren with as much force as he could, and he had the pleasure of seeing him taken completely off-guard before his face was covered with seawater. He cackled as Ren spluttered, and there was a flash of anger in his face before he started laughing too. He swept his arm in a wide arc, sending a wave of water that clocked Goro in the jaw even as he turned his face away, and they started heading deeper into the water as they splashed each other with increasing force. The other people around gave them a wide berth, not keen to get caught up in the battle, and soon it seemed to be just them in the water. But as Goro stepped further away from Ren to get a better angle of attack, he slipped. His sure feet got caught in the shifting sand below, and Goro was unable to readjust before he started falling backward. He screwed his eyes shut against the inevitable saltwater, but before he could hit the waves one hand grabbed his wrist and another splayed across the small of his back, catching him just in time. Goro opened his eyes to the sight of Ren’s face consuming the sky, the eclipsed sun making the ends of his damp, dark hair glow, and as Goro stared into the face of this new sun he was Icarus, lost in the light.
