Data Centres Threaten UK Climate Targets Big Tech’s plan to build more hyperscale data centres is putting the UK’s climate targets at risk. Developers’ own figures indicate that emissions from just 10 planned UK data centres will release 2.7 million tonnes of CO² each year, wiping out annual CO² savings from the switch to EVs.

Big Tech’s ambition to build more data centres is putting the UK’s climate targets at risk, and the Government is letting them.

It is estimated that more than 100 data centres are planned across the UK, the largest of which would consume more electricity than double all the households in Wales.

Pls look at our reply above. Relying on bioenergy requires vast amounts of land and vast amounts of water for not all that much energy.

You need vast amounts of land and water to get enough biomass to make any inroads into fossil fuel use. And genuine wastes and residues are all but fully utilised already.

We don't promote DAC, but the problem with your argument is that photosynthesis is broadly offset by respiration. Ecosystems, incl. soils store vast amounts of carbon, but CO2 is largely recycled. Energy 'generated' by photosynehtsis is ~1% of what solar power captures per ha...

Even if wood is "sustainably grown", burning it worsens the climate crisis for decades or centuries, as you can read in a letter signed by 800 scientist: www.pfpi.net/wp-content/u... . Euope is already losing its forest carbon sink, and BECCS simply moves carbon from the forest somewhere else.
