To go into the weeds a bit, a hemoglobin electrophoresis showed that I am still expressing something like 20% fetal hemoglobin which apparently isn't uncommon. I've read that heterozygous folks for sickle cell trait tend not to have episodes if they have even higher expression of the fetal gene.

I knew I was heterozygous for the sickle cell trait, but figured an event was really low probability based on my sleuthing of the medical literature so I did the Machu Picchu hike anyway. I had a splenic infarct on the hike.
