Guppy Books has signed a debut middle grade novel from Janeen Hayat, winner of the publisher's 2023 open submission competition. Bella Pearson, publisher, bought world rights from Paula Weiman at the Ash Literary Agency, for publication on 8 May. Evie and Maryam's Family Tree, inspired by Hayat's research into her family history, focuses on two classmates who sit on the same table at school - but that is all they have in common. Evie's friendship group are cool and outgoing, whereas Maryam is quiet, hard-working, and seems to prefer her own company. When the two are reluctantly paired for a school project - researching their family background - the girls discover that each has a copy of a mysterious folder called 'Family Recipes', written in a language neither understands. Pearson said: "I am so excited to be publishing Janeen's debut novel - she is such a wonderful writer and this story of two girls discovering the extraordinary coincidence of their joint family history is full of depth, wisdom and mystery - a unanimous winner in the eyes of the judges of the Guppy open submission competition, and a writer to watch out for!"
