I can't get over how wrinkly Opuntias get when they're thirsty.

Montana is planning on changing legislature to relist wolves as a "furbearer and game animal", instead of protecting them with manged status. Please leave a comment on the "Wolf Quota" amendment, it doesn't take very long and you can help wolves directly

This happens to me sometimes and it just makes me mad because I KNOW it makes no sense logically.

Cirsium andersonii, aka Anderson's Thistle. These look like weeds but they're very much native to the area and an important source of food for hummingbirds.

Leptosiphon nuttalli, a type of phlox native to the American Southwest.

Angelica scabrida, aka Charleston Mountain Angelica. This plant apparently grows only in the Spring Mountains in Nevada, very cool!

The view from Echo Overlook, the top of that ridge in the first pic. 1,500' elevation gain in about 2 miles, you can see the community down below where we parked. My legs were so sore afterwards.

This view is near the start of the Mt Charleston south loop trail, we hiked up and around to the top of that ridge on the right hand side called Echo Overlook.

Calochortus nuttallii, aka the sego lilly. Endemic to the Western US, this is the state flower for Utah but can be found all over.

Castilleja sp., aka "Indian Paintbrush" (I didn't pick the name).

Eriogonum umbellatum, aka Sulphur-flower buckwheat. Beautiful flowers.

Flowers and views at the Spring Mountains in Nevada, just outside Las Vegas. The Spring Mountains are what's called a "sky island", an isolated mountain range where the highland environment is radically different from the lowland (in this case, the Mojave Desert). More details in the alt text :)
