I realised earlier that I haven't seen a single picture of a giant tortoise on BlueSky yet. Time to remedy that!

Taken in the Seychelles in 2013. This individual made the mistake of resting under a tree full of birds!

Thousands of Giant Tortoises Anchor a Thriving Ecosystem on Aldabra, a Remote Atoll in the Indian Ocean The animals graze the vegetation into a picturesque turf, fertilize the soil with their dung and disperse seeds over large distances

Dispatch from Aldabra: Tortoise dung is one of the great pillars of Aldabraโ€™s ecosystem โ€” supporting all manner of life and ecological processes.

Important Public Service Announcement: Aldabra giants are objectively cuter than Galรกpagos giants. Left: Galรกpagos - Square face/snout; deeply set, small eyes; angry-looking mouth. Right - Aldabra: Round face/snout; large round eyes; semi-smiling mouth ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿข

Fuck it - I need this calm even more than I thought. Looks like those rich Qataris plan on leaning heavily on the magic of Aldabra Atoll itself in marketing their ecocide: www.aldabraislands.com -- they even take the word's of Sir David himself and plaster it across their commercial shit..๐Ÿคฎ

Just two giant pals hanging out in the evening on this #TortoiseTuesday - neatly highlighting the broad range of shell shapes on Aldabra Atoll: One has a wide open front, the other one a much lower front #FieldworkArchive ๐Ÿข๐ŸŒฟ

Aldabra Giant Tortoise.

The second largest tortoise species after their famous cousins from the Galapagos Islands, named after the Aldabra Atoll of the Seychelles.

If frog close-ups donโ€™t give you a brief respite from the horrors, would tortoise sex help?

Or have the millions of new users to this site matured our tastes a bit? (tortoise sex was a hot topic a few months ago here)
