Former NSW Labor minister condemns Forestry Corporation after greater glider β€˜den trees’ found at planned logging site Bob Debus says operations at Glenbog state forest on south coast show native forest logging is untenable

β€œForestry Corp is in breach of its own regulations so frequently that the practice is effectively part of its business model.

β€œNative forestry operations run at a permanent loss so in reality, taxpayers are paying the fines when they are prosecuted.”

NSW should end coal expansions to meet net zero targets A state government agency has declared that NSW cannot meet its climate targets if it keeps approving new coal mine extensions.

The Net Zero Commission’s report on coal mining in NSW is out - and it’s very clear. There’s no more room for coal in NSW.

Biodiversity offsets didn’t work in NSW. Will Labor make the same mistake nationwide? Offsets were meant to be a last resort for mitigating environmental damage from development projects, but rapidly became the default

This seems like really big news with implications for the federal govt also? Surely their view that they don’t need a climate trigger in the EPBC Act must be shaken by this?

The NSW Net Zero Commission recently advised the NSW Government that export emissions and local climate harms must be considered in proposed coal expansions.

The science and the law is clear - business as usual is no longer an option.

15.11.2025 09:33 β€” πŸ‘ 31    πŸ” 11    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

The case follows recent Court of Appeal decision, Denman v MACH Energy, where the court found a direct causal link between export emissions from coal, and local climate harms.

It also comes after the International Court of Justice confirmed countries will be liable for transboundary climate harms.

Principal Lawyer Anita O'Hart said:

β€œLocal communities in NSW are suffering from the impacts of extreme bushfires, floods and heatwaves.

β€œConsideration of those harms is a mandatory consideration for future fossil fuel projects, including for modifications and applications already in the system.”

Courts turn on coal mines over climate impacts The NSW Land and Environment Court invalidated the approval for the Ulan coal mine expansion near Mudgee, based on a precedent set in July.

More big news today as the Land and Environment Court makes orders, by consent, overturning approval of Glencore’s Ulan Coal Mine expansion.

Johnson Legal proudly represented Mudgee District Environment Group, in their fight for a clean, healthy and safe environment.
