NSW should end coal expansions to meet net zero targets A state government agency has declared that NSW cannot meet its climate targets if it keeps approving new coal mine extensions.

The Net Zero Commission’s report on coal mining in NSW is out - and it’s very clear. There’s no more room for coal in NSW.

Amazing work

The NSW Net Zero Commission recently advised the NSW Government that export emissions and local climate harms must be considered in proposed coal expansions.

The science and the law is clear - business as usual is no longer an option.

The case follows recent Court of Appeal decision, Denman v MACH Energy, where the court found a direct causal link between export emissions from coal, and local climate harms.

It also comes after the International Court of Justice confirmed countries will be liable for transboundary climate harms.

Principal Lawyer Anita O'Hart said:

“Local communities in NSW are suffering from the impacts of extreme bushfires, floods and heatwaves.

“Consideration of those harms is a mandatory consideration for future fossil fuel projects, including for modifications and applications already in the system.”

Courts turn on coal mines over climate impacts The NSW Land and Environment Court invalidated the approval for the Ulan coal mine expansion near Mudgee, based on a precedent set in July.

More big news today as the Land and Environment Court makes orders, by consent, overturning approval of Glencore’s Ulan Coal Mine expansion.
