The Rev. Hannah Kardon, a United Methodist pastor who leads United Church of Rogers Park in Chicago, has also protested at the Broadview facility on several occasions. She, like Black, said she has been shot multiple times with pepper bullets, including while she was praying with her eyes closed and hands lifted, wearing a clerical collar and stole. She said she often prays for the ICE agents, but especially for the immigrants detained inside. "I am praying for all of the people inside to be returned to their communities," she said. "These are our friends, our family, our cousins, our uncles. These are our community members, and they are being stolen." At least once, Kardon said, agents fired a pepper ball at her without warning, leaving her with a bruise on her abdomen that has lasted for weeks.

In my early interviews, it came up organically, initially without my even asking.

It quickly became clear that this was a common experience.

Reporter's notebook: I actually began working on this story shortly after footage of the incident showed up last month.

But by the time I finally got ahold of folks, the story grew: 2 *other* faith leaders I spoke with *also* reported being shot w/pepper balls while protesting this ICE facility.

I've been at many protests in our city over the years for a variety of different things, in my clergy attire, desiring to be a presence for peace in situations that can get volatile, desiring to be a person who different sides can be able to approach and talk with and have conversations with. I do think this is one of the important roles that faith leaders can play in contentious public situations. This was the first time that I felt like there was absolutely no regard and no respect for a person who was visibly associated with the faith tradition. It did not seem like it made one iota of difference.

I spoke to another pastor after publication, Rev. David Swanson.

He's only been to the facility once (last Friday), and wasn't shot w/pepper balls.

Instead, he says senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino just walked up to him — in full clerical garb — and began shoving.

He put it this way:

The country of origin of the brand doesn’t matter. The country where the auto is manufactured is what matters.

I shared two links. I didn’t assert anything.

Let's start up north in Canada, where a bunch of automakers build cars destined for America. Cars like the Dodge Charger, Chrysler Pacifica, and Chrysler Voyager, three (although really only two) Stellantis products built across the Detroit river from America in Windsor, Ontario. In fact, the Windsor Assembly Plant is the only facility in which these cars are made, meaning Stellantis wouldn't be able to pivot quickly if proposed tariffs hit Canada. Compared to Stellantis, General Motors is in a better spot. While the BrightDrop family of electric step vans is made in Ingersoll, Ontario, these aren't high-volume products. The only other vehicles GM assembles in Canada are full-sized pickup trucks, but the General also builds Silverados and Sierras in Michigan and Indiana, so a pivot is theoretically possible. As for Ford, since Oakville Assembly isn't building anything, the only blue oval vehicle rolling out of Canada soon is the Mustang GTD, hand-assembled in Multimatic's facility in Markham, Ontario.

However, domestic automakers aren't the only ones with risk of exposure to potential tariffs on imported goods from Canada. Almost all Lexus RX and NX crossovers sold in America are built in Cambridge, Ontario. Just down the highway in Woodstock, Ontario, Toyota builds non-hybrid RAV4 crossovers for the U.S. and Canadian markets. Considering America bought 475,193 RAV4s last year, 235,744 of which weren't electrified, the impact tariffs could have on this model would be significant. Speaking of Japanese automakers, Honda has a sizeable assembly complex in Alliston, Ontario that makes two models. Every single Civic sedan destined for the U.S. market is built there, and while hatchback models should avoid potential tariffs, the majority of Civic sales may be affected. As for the Honda CR-V, it may or may not grow more expensive if tariffs hit Canada, chiefly due to the fact that Honda builds CR-Vs for the North American market in both Canada and Indiana. It's possible that Honda could spread the cost of potential tariffs across all CR-Vs sold in America, but it's also possible that production mix could also be altered to minimize exposure.
