06.08.2025 10:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Things continue to get a little busier as we watch off the Carolina coast, as well as in the deep Atlantic. Dexter heads out to sea. Details on what's being watched for what hazards in today's post below or at theeyewall.com
05.08.2025 12:32 β π 12 π 6 π¬ 0 π 1The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Tropical Storm Dexter as is moves away from the U.S. They are also monitoring two areas of potential development over the next seven days: one off the west coast of Africa, and one off the east U.S. coast.

I also think the scifi imaginary that we attach to these systems distracts us from the more immediate, very real problems these systems impose in terms of de-skilling, labor devaluation, and executive mismanagement, all of which pose far more dangers than a chat bot threating to do things it canβt.
04.08.2025 22:23 β π 12 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0None of the models we have are aware of able to make decisions; what they do is mine the hundreds of billions of inputs they have to cobble together statistically plausible responses. We have modeled a narrow response to βout of control AIβ in our written culture. Thatβs what drives the response.

04.08.2025 20:18 β π 59 π 7 π¬ 1 π 0In the US, we are in the process of making that change, though it is imperfect & often undercut by our elected officials. I've long advocated other countries look at how the US teaches & trains for strategic decision making so they can skip over some of the painful steps we had to go through. 3/
04.08.2025 14:37 β π 19 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0I worry about other countries coming online for wildland fire. The tendency is to think you just need more stuff--more engines, aircraft, firefighters. It's an approach that prevents you from seeing that it doesn't reach the results you want until after you have a series of really bad outcomes. 1/
04.08.2025 14:37 β π 64 π 11 π¬ 3 π 2The Atlantic tropics has 3 areas to watch. None are of significant concern at this time, but we explain through all of them in our AM update below or at theeyewall.com

04.08.2025 12:20 β π 26 π 7 π¬ 2 π 0People often think of politics (and markets) as self-correcting: when things move too far in one direction, rational forces push them back in the other direction. Gerrymandering and unregulated money have made Republican politics self-reinforcing, however, and weβre going to test new limits soon.
04.08.2025 03:17 β π 161 π 47 π¬ 5 π 0PMEL tsunami reseachers posted this excellent page. "About 35 minutes after the earthquake, tsunami recording of DART 21416 peaked at a maximum amplitude of 0.85 m, the second largest DART amplitude ever recorded." (2/6) nctr.pmel.noaa.gov/kamchatka202...

02.08.2025 17:14 β π 134 π 60 π¬ 4 π 7I received a comment about feeling like we're getting more magnitude 6+ earthquakes lately. It's funny how recent news can influence our perceptions. Here's global M6+ earthquakes for the last 25 years, and zoomed to the last 3 years. It's human nature to look for patterns. What do you see?
03.08.2025 23:31 β π 39 π 15 π¬ 7 π 1Letβs sit with this a moment. Because our government saw fit to violently abduct a woman her daughters have been left motherless and out in the world. Where is this 13yo? And who is this man who paid for her transport?
I am a former rape crisis counselor, and I canβt help but think the worst. 3/
The 17yo hasnβt been seen since 6/5, but an attorney said she left the country to be with an older sibling. The 13yo is just gone.
A woman transported her to NJ after a man paid her $200 to do so. And now no one knows where she is.
She is a child, and this is absolutely terrifying. 2/
Do you remember the horrific abduction in Worcester, MA where protestors clashed with ICE as they ripped a woman away from her family? The horror continues.
The womanβs 13 and 17 year old daughters were placed in foster care. They are now both missing. 1/

The demolition of US public media will be remembered as one of the greatest cultural blunders of the 21st century.
It should also serve as a cautionary tale about how rapidly bipartisan support can vacillate to partisan recision in just a few months. (Iβm looking at you, US science.)
