The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Tropical Storm Dexter as is moves away from the U.S. They are also monitoring two areas of potential development over the next seven days: one off the west coast of Africa, and one off the east U.S. coast.

I also think the scifi imaginary that we attach to these systems distracts us from the more immediate, very real problems these systems impose in terms of de-skilling, labor devaluation, and executive mismanagement, all of which pose far more dangers than a chat bot threating to do things it can’t.

In the US, we are in the process of making that change, though it is imperfect & often undercut by our elected officials. I've long advocated other countries look at how the US teaches & trains for strategic decision making so they can skip over some of the painful steps we had to go through. 3/

I worry about other countries coming online for wildland fire. The tendency is to think you just need more stuff--more engines, aircraft, firefighters. It's an approach that prevents you from seeing that it doesn't reach the results you want until after you have a series of really bad outcomes. 1/
