I've an original UK copy so it's not on my Skylarking either. Apparently one of the very best transitions on the album is the one that takes you into it, but I've tragically never heard it.

I love how records make listening to music an action in itself. Walkmen, which would eventually evolve into Spotify today turned music into something you listen to as you do something else. I think the fact you can see the record spinning, unlike a CD say, makes all the difference. Hypnotic.

I don't mind tears on the sleeve, or bends or biro marks, they just add character. But damage to the record itself is painful. I was brought up to treat them with reverence.

That is awful. You don't have to replace them all or even any. Start by working out what your desert Island discs would be and grab just them. Add as you really want them. Might be worth investing in a cleaner to see if you can get your old mints back to a VG+?

Yes, I've got both too and love them, especially Towers of London, what a great design concept: love the print on the plastic overlay. Love Sgt Rock with its cartoon strip and the multi fold Senses sleeve too!

But you don't have to! You can pick up a decent deck pretty cheaply, a small amp and a pair of shelf speakers and you're away. It will change the way you listen to music for the better, and you'll love it too!

Oh that's a brilliant first anything. Despite it being nearly impossible to realistically choose a favourite Joni album, Hissing of Summer Lawns is mine. Probably...

I think if the lyric here wasn't so silly, this song would be held in far higher regard: musically speaking, it's a triumph, with the guitar solo one of the finest moments on the album.

He's pretty great too. But I think Clarke's versatility in writing for Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly, Erasure and other projects just nudges him ahead.

I'd agree with him too. It's a top ten horror for me, despite it not being all that scary. It's still oddly transgressive and has rural gothic vibes to spare. Just make sure you watch the UK cut, the American Studio butchered it!

I love WTF Kenneth too, and was disappointed with Monster when none of the other tracks quite lived up with the storming first single. I Reckon you should try Document (if you haven't already).

You wouldn't be the first, they're not to everyone's tastes (although it didn't seem that way when Automatic for the People came out and they became the biggest band in the world).

I'd be curious to know which R.E.M. tracks you do like, mind.

I don't know though, in that same year, Ghosts by Japan—a brilliant song, but not exactly a dancefloor filler—made it all the way to number 5! So there was some taste for the eccentric out there.

Then again, Bizarre Love Triangle couldn't crack the top 40 in '86, which remains a travesty.

It's funny you should say that. I've often thought, for a band so often compared with the Beatles, it's a wonder XTC didn't have more big hits. I think Senses... was the only track to crack the top 10, and even then, it only made it to 10. They had such high calibre singles too.

Skylarking's my favourite too. For me, Black Sea probably has the better collection of tracks, but Skylarking hangs together better as an album, and to be fair to him, Todd Rundgren had a lot to do with that, despite the hourly arguments with Andy the whole way through the process.

The guitar solo is sheer bliss. Lovesexy is such an underrated album, not one bad track on there.
