When bike lanes are not enough: The role of connected low-stress cycling infrastructure on cycle commuting in urban Aotearoa New Zealand
Promoting bicycling is a shared aspiration among cities internationally in pursuit of sustainable urban development. However, while cities are increasβ¦
STUDY: We found that while the majority of the roads in these cities are low stress, they are poorly connected, and the greater provision of low-stress cycling infrastructure is associated with more people cycling to work.β
No surprise, but evidence confirming the obvious is valuable. #UrbanTruth

You can become disabled or homeless at any time.
They arenβt moral failings.
You canβt βjust try harderβ.
All it takes is one accident, one illness, one catastrophic event and your life changes forever.
Itβs a minority group you can join at any time.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says β Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikesΒ and people in cars and on foot, a new studyΒ of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.
Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.
ALL ROAD USERS.
What about painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.
For sharrows, itβs actually safer to NOT have them.

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.
And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

Iβm about as far left as you can getβ¦ but we do have problems with MAiD in Canada.
How do I know? It was βofferedβ to me in lieu of care.
Iβm disabled, I was alone, my conditions expensive.
Yes I was allowed to say βNoβ, but no alternative care was offered.
Thatβs coercion.

Street transformation from car space to street willed with people including kids
Itβs not just about what you remove (cars, noise, dirty air). Itβs about what you add (people walking, a lot of bike parking, trees, outdoor dining, and room for kids to play safely). Amsterdam: 1986 and today.
Streets for people.

Busy arterial street filled with congested cars
Bike-lanes donβt cause traffic congestion.
Car dependency, dumb land-use sprawl, too many (& bigger) cars being driven too much taking up too much space, highly subsidized driving costs, and not enough choices in how to get around, ALL cause traffic congestion.
Think about it. THATβS common sense.

Great graphic showing cities on a triangle graph showing if they are most oriented to public transit, active mobility or cars.
Have you seen this? This recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips that are by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

A portion of the StrΓΈget pedestrian street in Copenhagen that widens into a grand people-place.
One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the StrΓΈget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued βno cars means no business,β but the street has been a massive retail success, the cityβs busiest shopping street.

Proud to support @jennykwan.bsky.socialβs bill to close loopholes that let Canadian weapons be funnelled through the U.S. without oversight. With ICE abuses and U.S. arms transfers violating human rights, Canada must not be complicit.
