99 times out of 10 they seem to be used to sexualize the model. There almost never really seems to be a good reason for making one, beyond the exposΓ©.

Is anyone else growing tired of the barebones, back to the basics, scrolling β€˜ata boy’ apps popping up in hopes of supplanting and replacing fb, ig and X?

After the revolution let’s build something better, more connecting and innovative; in the right sort of ways.

How far back is a long time ago? A year ago? A month? 10 years?
Maybe it depends. But I’ve reached the age where β€œI remember it like it was yesterday” has poignant meaning.

3 decades ago I nearly dropped out of high school. I graduated with D- average, never took an ACT or SAT or any other placement exam.
23 years ago I was homeless.
20 years ago I decided to go back to school.
14 years ago I graduated with a BA
9 years ago I was homeless (again).
6 years ago I moved back to the city I was first homeless in.

This year I am graduating with a terminal degree from a university I never thought I’d ever qualify for, I’m now a life member of a highly selective honor society, I own my own business, I am taking chances and I am saying yes to opportunities.

I don’t know what waits for me next week any more than I know about next summer. I have hope and I have fight left in me. I know what I am capable of, though I don’t always know how to sell it. I am a work in progress.

@vivianjoya.bsky.social I think a lot of people feel social media can be used for self expression. Unfortunately, in political times such as these, that expression can also become weaponized against the creator. And more commonly: monetized without royalties to its creator. I find it disheartening.

Isn’t Davy Amazing? I think so.

Hey #artist (s), #photographer (s), #writer (s), #author (s), #museum (s), #curator (s), and #gallery (ist)

What is social media? What is its purpose? Why do we have it? What need does it fill? What problem does it solve? It wasn’t here when I 20. But it’s here now. What should we do with it?

It’s a kind of long-distance and temporally separated connection and conversation that gets sparked.
I can say, I certainly feel that kind of connection with long-dead authors and photographers who have published books when I visit libraries.

That reminds of something @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social once wrote. Something to the effect of: For an author, there’s a chance something written can spark a conversation within a future reader. When that reader becomes a writer and writes their own response, a relationship and conversation develops.

Absolutely perfect, Mariah! To be a healthy human we need to be informed and connected, but we also need it in the right ways and the right amounts.
Living life is the real important aspect, we were capable of living connected and informed lives before the ad soaked socials, we can do it after too.❀️

Bluesky certainly has a connection focused approach! IG is too chaotic, and there are STILL folks who dream of making big connections there. Most connections are superficial at best, as the likes have always been.

Keep doing what feels right for you! Take breaks, read books, make art. Live life!

30.01.2025 14:54 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The ads are obnoxious! And beyond that, ig has become a disorganized chaotic scroller.

I’m not sure how to utilize substack. It feels like a place of substance but too much? Maybe?

The connection is what we should have! It makes me happy to hear you’re finding that again!

Hey friends, #artists and #photographers… how are you all feeling about social media these days?

I want to be connected and to know what’s happening in your work but I am also dead tired of the endless feeds and drama. I just want to log off and never come back. So again, how are you all fairing?

It’s been said the political moves of then Wisconsin Governor, Scott Walker, set the U.S. up for the kind of politics we’re seeing today.

A very dear friend asked if I knew my why. Do you know your why?
.
Mine is simply this: I photograph what it is to be alive today. I am making a record for some uncertain future audience. I am not even sure if this audience is alive today or even human, but I must make it.
