Stoked to present my master's thesis work to the public for the first time today at UND's Graduate Research Achievement Day. TLDR: storm interactions are important, and we may be starting to understand why. Those going to the Iowa Severe Storms Conference will get to hear more!

Had so much fun presenting my research at the UND Graduate Research Achievement Day! It was a unique experience sharing some complex atmospheric concepts to people outside our discipline!

If you're still at #AMS2026, come hang out with me this afternoon at Poster 979.
It's actually the first time I've shared my own tropical cyclone research in over a year and a half, so I'd love to bounce ideas off of anyone interested. 🌀

The official debut of my research group was tonight at #AMS2026!
Sooooooo proud of Sydney, Kyle, and Payton, as well as our other students repping North Dakota this week.
Stay tuned for much more from my Northern Plains Sickos at the Tropical Conference in March 👀

I just submitted a mock proposal for a class assignment using APAR… and I was actually quite excited to pursue that research down the road.

Hope this is the first of all the NOAA employees getting rehired, but for now, I’m super happy for my friend!

A summary of presentations I'll be giving at the upcoming American Meteorological Society conference, and additional events I will be participating in. These will take place from Saturday, January 11 through Monday, January 13.
Excited for #AMS2025 in less than 1 month!
It will be a busy, front-loaded week with 3 talks, repping North Dakota's graduate program, and the Conference for Early Career Professionals.
I'll be in New Orleans most of the week, and eager to get new connections going in the meantime!

Dear friends,
I am a former student of the amazing Dr. Jana Houser. Jana an… Kelly Butler needs your support for Support the Houser Family's Fire Recovery
Dr. Jana Houser and her family just experienced a damaging house fire this week. Her home was special to her and every student she opened it too. Help us give back to someone that gives so much to her students and the weather community:

Map spanning the eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic basins showing sea surface temperature (SST) averaged during August-September 1991-2020. Black contour indicates the 26C isotherm (constant line of SST -- temperatures above this value are more likely to support TCs).
Map spanning the eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic basins showing mid-level relative humidity averaged during August-September 1991-2020. More moist air tends to better support the thunderstorms that "power" TCs.
Map spanning the eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic basins showing vertical wind shear averaged during August-September 1991-2020. Lower values of wind shear (lighter colors) tend to better support the development of disturbances that can become TCs. Wind shear values higher than the black contour tend to be too strong.
Map spanning the eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic basins showing potential intensity averaged during August-September 1991-2020. Higher values of potential intensity imply a more thermodynamically favorable environment: air parcels have more energy and can more easily rise to release that energy into the atmosphere, helping the thunderstorms that "power" TCs.
I host a webpage on the six "ingredients" for tropical cyclone (TC) formation. It's powered by Python & by freely-available online resources.
I invite you to use it as a reference when discussing factors like SSTs! Expect more updates over the next few months.

Newcomers to Bluesky:
Welcome!
In the 14 months that I've been here, I've seen lots of growth, development of features, and most importantly, normal people and engagement.
It takes patience to build a network, but give it a try!
