@oliverharper.bsky.social has put together a very interesting 40 minutes that covers the bizarre, often misjudged but fascinating development of this virtual reality-riding movie. If you have never seen the film, it doesn't matter; this video is very well told and illustrated.

Hugely impressive puppetry and synched performance, especially at a live event.

The 1981 horror film Dead & Buried has probably the most stomach turning Texas switch out there. Amazing special make up effects work by Stan Winston and team. I won't spoil it on here, but one for @tvaziri.com's records (I'm sure you've seen it).

I've posted this before, but I don't care; it's Jerry Goldsmith's birthday:

One of my favourite of his cues. It has everything: lush orchestra, military drumming, drum machines, synth glissando, cartoon sound effects & changes tone at least 5 times.

The great film composer Jerry Goldsmith was born 97 years ago today.

Among his endless great contributions to film and TV soundtracks, he also composed (in my opinion) the most immediate and attention grabbing trailer music of all time

Interesting thread here, if you love great film music. You can hear the difference clearly.

Weirdly, 3 years before Total Recall, Superman IV also began recording in Munich with the Graunke orchestra, and also ended up being moved to London and the National Philharmonic London.

The new Muppet Show is an affectionate portal to the '70s version & its anarchic puppet sensibility. It's in HD with digital effects, contemporary pop culture ref's & celebrities, but bridges admirably to that magical analogue TV world of variety theatre, wooden clipboards & dusty painted backdrops.

Whenever I turn on The Great Muppet Caper, I end up rewinding and rewatching the 'Hey A Movie!' sequence about ten times in a row. It's a masterpiece of direction, blocking and camera movement, editing, happiness and absurdity.

It seemed as though Pryce saw a younger version of himself in Mescal, and their exchange was touching.

I finally saw Hamnet last night & was quite moved. Its message about how lived experience in art speaks to everyone really captures now on many levels.

Following the screening, Jonathan Pryce chatted with Paul Mescal. Pryce gifted Mescal with his stage copy of Hamlet as a birthday present.

Catherine O'Hara's performance in Beetlejuice has one of my favourite physical comedy gestures: she delicately pats her chest to locate the source of her sudden vocal possession. In what seemed to be a lovingly inspired take on this scene in The Mask, a police officer basically repeats this.
