Companion species, revisited Dr. Julie Carpenter (she/her) published a post on Ko-fi

I wrote about how AI systems function less like sentient companions and more like infrastructural cohabitants: persistent, influential, and embedded in the small decisions that structure contemporary life. "Companion species, revisited" (no paywall!): ko-fi.com/post/Compani...

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone β€” period.

Labor has brushed aside concerns over the social media ban. But what if it doesn’t work as promised? If Meta, the world’s biggest social media company, expects problems after a year of preparation, then what should the rest of us be expecting?

I spoke to @australia.theguardian.com about the unworkability of Australia’s #SocialMediaBan for children and young people:

Coast Guard Says Swastika and Noose Displays Are No Longer Hate Incidents

Currently in Germany. Germans routinely ask me re U.S. politics: "Why did you not learn from what happened here?" I've explained that we are not taught about the rise of fascism, and only see overt actions/symbols as problematic. But that isn't even the case anymore. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/20/u...

This is bad. The lack of β€œAI literacy” is disturbing, but this also is the direct result of purposeful design choices and claims by AI companies. They need AI to be a β€œrevolutionary tech” to keep the money coming in and user interaction for data monetization.

As an AI expert, people ask me all the time whether AI will end the world. No, AI is the distraction. Humans are perfectly capable of endangering our own existence. It is people that kill other people. Always. People like to blame AI for misinformation, but it stems from humans.
