Why we launched Denmark’s second Young Academy (and what’s different about it) YATSI aims to represent scientists based in academia and in industry, and to build bridges between the two sectors.

Young Academies give a voice to and represent the interests of young scientists in academia, helping them to be heard by national governments and wider society

Our new study in @science.org shows that over half of forests have become more fragmented since 2000, threatening biodiversity and climate.

Brilliantly led by @yibiaozou.bsky.social as part of his PhD — and a huge team effort from @crowtherlab.bsky.social 👏

"Biologists often become alienated from mathematics at an early stage in their career under the misconception [...] that biology is not a mathematical science. The claim is also often made that mathematical theory is overly simplistic, ignoring the [...] complex nature of biological systems."

Good insight here about interdisciplinarity. It's not just getting people from the right fields in the same room; it's about getting the right people, those who are honestly open to learning about the questions and methods of other fields. (Something @sfiscience.bsky.social is so good at.)

Using linear regression, based on data from 318 soil landscapes, if we assume that human activity intensity does not influence the relationship between livestock provisioning and bird-watching recreation (a), then we might conclude that there is no effect between these two services. However, when controlling for human activity intensity (b), a direct trade-off is found because human activity intensity positively influences both services.

How do human drivers shape ecosystem services and their interactions? The answer impacts policy and management.

We used Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) to model ecosystem service interactions as a causal network for data from many Quebec landscapes

Sync in richness decreases with spatial, environmental, and functional distance; but sync in biomass only is induced by functional similarity. The decrease in stability with sync indicates that preserving large and heterogeneous ecosystems is essential to ensure their stability, pls repost!
