Without wading into the discourse too much, the reason many (straight/cis) men are not getting laid is because toxic masculinity tells them they cannot under any circumstances laugh at themselves. It’s not that deep!

Anyway, I've found that "Hi, I'm Lee, I like reading and rock and nerdy stuff, I saw you said you like x, y, z. I'd love to hear you talk about that over coffee/food if you're open to it" is undefeated as an opener.

It really does seem though like younger people are not being taught this stuff in a healthy way. I know a lot of ppl my age who learned the entire enterprise from other dumbassess in peer group or online, never from a trusted adult with like... integrity.

The biggest part is context: there are places (apps, bars, singles events, etc.) where approaching a persona and asking if they'd like to get coffee respectfully is cool, and times when it ain't (while they're at work, while they appear to not want attention like earbuds in).

I had about 80% good experience, even with dates that didn't work out. the other 20% was insane though, tbf: a woman dosed me, a dude hyperfetishized me 20 mins into first date, and one person asked me to tell them my worst childhood trauma in a text while I was driving to the bar to meet. :D

I've had a lot of success with the following when I went back to dating as a lefty dude after being married since age 18:
-Treat dates with politeness and respect
-Ask them questions about themselves and comment on things that are interesting
-See if goals/expectations align
-Wash your ass
