Completely mad proposal from the Commons to hide the names of MPs staff who have parliamentary passes which could prove invaluable to vested interests looking to buy access to Westminster. Staff members taking hospitality + freebies would no longer be identified.

There's an impact assessment of the visa break published alongside the rules. It's estimated to reduce the number of asylum claims over the next 18 months by 1,400. Given over 100,000 claimed asylum last year, barely changes the system challenges, while having a high impact on individuals

Trying to think what the longest β€œstorm” has been? Iran’s nearly fifty years, Myanmar depends on your ethnicity, not sure how you’d deal with Somalia

Why do these photos of Vance and Dolan have identical photoshopped hands on them?

Free day place for a student at the theology libraries conference. If you want it I thunk it's there for the taking (sudden readvertisement 20 days before conference suggests lack of applications...)

The whole show is very good at walking a fine line between complete nonsense and niche historical accuracy

YouTube video by Lioneye Z. Archer: Axis union & avalanches

Reminded of Archer being convinced Ireland was an Axis power. He must have misunderstood which Axis

Further on this, even amongst Brits I’m always surprised how few people seem to know a significant amount of our water comes from underground and is being taken very unsustainably

28. As Michael Ramsey memorably wrote near the end of his great book, The Gospel and the Catholic Church (published in 1936, 25 years before he became Archbishop of Canterbury), the β€œcredentials” of Anglicanism β€œare its incompleteness, with the tension and travail in its soul. It is clumsy and untidy, it baffles neatness and logic. For it is sent not to commend itself as β€˜the best type of Christianity,’ but by its very brokenness to point to the universal Church wherein all have died”
(see NCP, Β§60)

Just finished reading the updated Nairobi-Cairo proposals on the future structure of the Anglican Communion and I loved the reminder of these words of Michael Ramsey's:

3 primary school children dressed up for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: a boy in a Naval captain costume, a little girl with Union Flag face paint. And a bespectacled boy dressed in an orange boiler suit, white helmet with Union Flag insignia and a placard saying β€˜Victory to the Miners’.

Not World Book Day, but any excuse to share this Platinum Jubilee post from the DfE official Twitter account:

A small girl wearing a rabbit costume and blue coat carries a book as she walks to school.

Her mother (head out of shot) wheels her baby brother along in a pushchair.

The baby says "Peter Rabbit may be the 'Hero' of the story, but surely the obedient, widowed Mrs Rabbit is a more effective symbol of the oppression inherent within Mister McGregor's regime"

The girls looks furious and snaps "Mum!! He's critiquing my world book day costume from a marxist perspective again!"

A cartoon reminder that tomorrow is World Book Day (In the UK anyway). Originally for the @theguardian.com

I do not get invited to enough of these kinds of things to have known that, but thankfully the friend who invited me as his guest knew to tell me!

Last year I was invited to a dinner that said "informal dress" which I discovered meant suit and tie. Because formal dress would have been black or white tie.

All of this Trump induced chaos presents another glorious opportunity for the government to finally break any fiction of their election pledge and raise income tax to fund the overdue and critical reforms in last year's Defence Review.

They won't.

Deeply sorry to hear of the death of Bishop Andrew, Bishop of Guildford.

Anyone who knew him even briefly would have seen his kindness and his optimism. More than once he reminded me, when I needed it, to have faith that God is good.

May he rest in peace, and rise in glory.

I do love a ghost gable like this found near Ancoats in Manchester - but it's rarer still to find the intangible signs of the puff of smoke from the chimney...
