I'm excited about the launch yesterday, but I remain highly skeptical of the vision-only approach.

Take this scenario, where a Waymo swerved violently to avoid hitting a woman who fell into the road. Every robotaxi must be able to perform this maneuver 100/100 times. There is zero room for error.

Tesla might have an uphill battle – I'm not sure the brand is implicitly associated with "trust & safety", and that matters more than ever with robotaxis!

Stepping into any robotaxi involves an incredible amount of trust from the user. Waymo has carefully built trust with the public over *years*. Even then, I know people that refuse to try one.

Waymo is hyper-aware that one bad news headline could crush them.

Great write-up! I wonder if their main motivation was cutting licensing costs internally, hah.

I kinda like this decision! Go has my favorite error handling of any language I’ve used. And the verbosity isn’t an issue with LLM autocomplete.

Being conservative in adding new features likely benefits the language long term.

Uhh I think they took a wrong turn

It looks like supported cameras can sign & attach metadata to a photo when captured. Apple could add this with a software update.

Supported by Adobe, Nikon, Leica and others — seems promising!

I’m no expert, just speculating of course.

Right! The service is designed around individual ridership, right now.

Suppose you can get 4-6 people interested in a specific route/commute, and a van only serves that route while the demand exists.

If people lose interest, the route ceases to exist. No need for an empty van to roll around!

Route sharing + Waymo vans sounds like a good future to me.

I wonder if you could get better road utilization by dynamically planning routes for 4-6 people, versus static bus routes (designed for 30-50 people) that get low ridership.
