19.11.2025 07:39 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Sounds like Hollywood's mad dash to emulate Netflix
They licensed shows and movies to Netflix, people canceled cable en masse and replaced it with Netflix, hurting the cable channels that buttered Hollywood's bread, so they decide to just hasten the decline themselves with their own streamers
They did have the iPod Touch as a sort of transitional step to the iPhone

19.11.2025 07:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Growing up seeing how hard we shifted after 9/11 and the obsession with "terror" and seeing Iraq basically destroyed in real time for no reason on the evening news really left an impression on me
My mind boggles at people forgetting all that
Their sister station in Denver wasn't doing that
I really wonder what caused KRBK to decide that blocking the scoreboard was a good idea...

I don't think Life is Worth Losing (the one before it) even really qualifies as comedy, it was just depressing as shit

21.09.2025 10:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Many historic VHF stations could keep their primo numbers as virtual channels while really transmitting from now-stronger UHF frequencies
Making them key components of Sinclair and Nexstar's intensified consolidation efforts, helping to give them their outsized role within ABC as a network
The transition to ATSC 1.0 favored UHF signals over VHF signals, a new reality not reflected by the outdated UHF discount
Realizing the massive loophole that had been opened, station groups went on a buying spree, as the limit to 39% of TV households had effectively been doubled
The UHF discount in particular is key: a relic of the analog era when UHF stations had weaker signals than VHF ones, the FCC only counted them for half the household reach of a VHF station, important for the cap that limits how many households a station group can legally reach
21.09.2025 10:52 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0And it's worth noting that Sinclair and Nexstar as we know them (or Nexstar at all) do not exist without decades of deregulation
They could not function as they do without the Telecommunications Act of 1996, or if the FCC had gotten around to repealing the UHF discount in 2009
All of these things provided the gunpowder for Nexstar to ignite
21.09.2025 10:35 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0If said bankrupt company weren't taken over by Soo Kim, who then convinced Media General to basically let him take over...
If the McCormicks and Chandlers hadn't sold Tribune to Sam Zell...
If the CW weren't a burdensome asset "inherited" from prior regimes at Paramount and WBD...
I have been thinking of all the steps and missteps by other companies that led Nexstar, at least, to where it is today
If CBS, Warner Bros., and Tribune had not collectively given up on UPN and the WB...
If Vincent Young hadn't bankrupted his family's company with the KRON mess...
The entire existence of The Point with Mark Hyman is also a receipt on Sinclair
21.09.2025 02:10 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think Nexstar has been far more effective than Sinclair, in large part because they landed Tribune
Sinclair did most of their buying from 2012-14, and most station groups that sold to them did so under duress or just because they wanted out of their investment
I mean, Comcast owns NBCUniversal, Cablevision used to own Rainbow (AMC Networks), and TCI kingpin John Malone has had his fingers in all sorts of pies for decades

The first set of columns use the colors of the gay pride flag, with the addition of the original SMPTE color on the final column. The second set of columns contains two pride flags - the pansexual flag horizontally, and the asexual flag flipped and horizontal. The final set of columns contains the three colors of the transgender flag and the two POC-inclusive colors, followed by the original bar gradient from the SMPTE ECR-1-1978 pattern.
