Thomas Jefferson used that exact phrase in a letter he wrote on December 29, 1813, to Alexander von Humboldt. The full quote expresses his view that actions by certain Native American tribes, who had allied with the British during the War of 1812, justified a harsh response.

Jefferson's hypocrisy: "I tremble for my country when I reflect that [his] god is just." This, after he denied an 1808 Cherokee delegation's request to also name Native Americans as citizens of the new nation to protect them from renegade European immigrants who robbed and murdered them. Jefferson wrote that the US "...now to pursue them to extermination..."

The Onadaga people remember George Washington as 'The Town Destroyer,' and the killer of women and children. Washington once described Native Americans [Indian people] as "Having nothing human except the shape," equating them with wolves as "both beasts of prey, tho' they differ in shape," and, in his words, deserving of "total ruin."

Native Americans are the REAL Americans. The rest of us are immigrants. 🏞️👩‍👧‍👦🏰🗽

History lends evidence that the brutality currently exhibited by the US government originated from the "founding fathers" themselves.
