28.02.2026 20:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Todayβs post focuses on weather in the Plains. High winds and fire danger there. Additionally, we take a look at the failure of Colorado River negotiations this weekend. This is a big deal, and we have a bevy of links to primary sources that explain this issue. The American Academy of Actuaries warns that dismantling NCAR would degrade the catastrophe models insurers depend on to price climate riskβdriving up premiums and threatening coverage availability nationwide.
"Uncertainty carries a positive cost."

Last December, weather and climate scientists sat down with us to tell us why they loved the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and why it benefits us all. Last night, the NSF began dismantling it. Listen to what they have to say, and why it's urgent that we #SaveNCAR wclivestream.com/act
13.02.2026 22:27 β π 62 π 52 π¬ 1 π 3AGU has an easy-to-use toolkit set for public feedback to proposed government actions. Now is a great time to respond to NSFβs proposed shuttering of NCAR. agu.quorum.us/campaign/154...
29.01.2026 18:51 β π 15 π 17 π¬ 0 π 3We knew the NSF letter about NCAR would come. I think this is an occasion that will require great coordination and strategical thinking. UCAR should respond as a block, coordinating a response across universities (especially in the South, and large public universities that use NCAR data a lot)
24.01.2026 02:18 β π 19 π 6 π¬ 2 π 0I would strongly encourage those who value the scientific & societal legacies of NCAR to offer feedback by March 13. I would expect, under present circumstances, perspectives from industry partners will be especially critical, though everyone's voice is of course important.

So much American science passes through ncar.
Some of my closest collaborators and smartest colleagues are at NCAR.
This work would not have been possible without the computational resources from @ncar-ucar.bsky.social!

New study by Hu et al. reveals #IndonesianThroughflowβs nonlinear response to #CO2, with a rapid decline after crossing a #TippingPoint. The first point may be approaching, signaling a potential climate #Tipping element with implications for global #climate.

Chris Piecuch shows how the rate of sea-level rise along the US coast has doubled since 1900, from 2 cm to 4 cm per decade. It has risen by 40 cm by now.
Here he briefly explains this (and how the DOE claimed the opposite) at the AGU25 meeting last week.

From @AGU.org: Senators are working on legislation to save NCAR, but we need extra support for these 8 states. Your Senators in Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas, and Wyoming need to hear from you.

Our fieldwork doesn't only happen at sea!
C-CoMP researchers working with @maratimes.bsky.social collected Providence River water to test extraction methods for samples collected on C-CoMP cruises. In terms of filtering speed, 5 L of Sargasso sw = 50 mL of Providence River water!
Earth scientists know a lot more about getting out of an ice age than going into one. We report an episode of AMOC slowdown at 115 thousand years ago that's likely astronomically forced (via sea-ice) and coincides with a delayed drawdown of atmospheric CO2 @natcomms.nature.com rdcu.be/eALD1

Emily uses sterile forceps to load filters onto filter holders in one of the labs on the R/V Atlantic Explorer. Emily is using the filters to capture particles, including microbes, from the seawater. The Secretary of Commerce's new policy requiring his personal review of all NOAA contracts over $100,000 is directly harming American science. π§ͺ
How do I know? Because this morning, twelve of America's rising leaders in climate science (including myself) were furloughed.
As of today, all current NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellows have been furloughed due to the Dept of Commerce not releasing the funding for the program. In addition no new Fellows were awarded this year. cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc
