I always felt that the EU was the only way to stand up to global companies, US tech and oligarchs. Sadly the right wing money convinced the UK electorate otherwise and a Brexit means the UK is alone and squeezed by all.

I keep mine because somehow I have gotten in the habit of cooking the FT magazine recipe of the week. The crab πŸ¦€ pie last week was ok but not my best.

TNT sports in the UK is showing adverts about how China rescued Japanese orphans in WW2. They really spend money and go all out to improve China’s image in the west. Big media companies seem happy to take that money.

Europeans are so spoiled with an easy life style. They don’t see the long term thread of the big powers slowly undermining our society and standard of living. Get serious and move armies into western Ukraine to allow their army to move east.

Not just disconnect from US military. Same for tech. It’s just mad that Europe has allowed large parts of its money to disappear into the hands of a few US billionaires.

I am still in touch with a US IT guy i worked with in 1990s. He has gone full MAGA whilst posting all his European cruise trips on FB. The MAGA crowd thinks they have a god given right to dominate the world with Europe just a national park / museum for them to spend their pension plans on.

More in my case as after IR35 enforcement I also pay the employer NI. I just take more holiday and don’t do overtime as no incentive to work more.

I find it β€œannoying” when over 80s give their opinion to / about under 40s. Their view of the world was formed at a time that’s so different than ours that i am not sure their opinion counts. That’s one issue when people live for 4 generations.

Could be worse. He is also threatening to take the UK BBC to court for 1bn USD in damages because it exercised a right to free speech.

The US was able to build such a huge tech industry part because of innovation and culture, but also in a large part because of access to huge USD liquidity. They chose to invest that in tech rather than renewables, affordable electric cars and more labour intensive industries.

I always feel a bit β€œannoyed” with over the top remembrance day events in the UK. My great uncle died in forced labour working in a Dutch shipyard. He was completely forgotten and never really mentioned in the family. The winners write history and get the grand remembrance.

Motorhome and expensive cars are flooding the streets where I live. My guess is most is inheritance money.

I helped my 18 year old place her first ever share trade today as she wants to invest some of her gap year earnings. She was not best pleased when i explained what the stamp duty charge was….

Only because they lost votes to two other far right parties. Overal vote for far right is stable.

Maybe Europe should be more assertive towards β€œowning” Greenland and invest to get access to the rare earths.

Late 1990s telco fibre swap sales all over again.

I never understand why the ISA limit needs to be 20k per year. We have comfortable middle class salaries but struggle to save anywhere near that limit.

Yes, SAP would probably object to an EU initiative to create a competitor and if it comes off the ground you then need 100s of app providers to port or certify their software to run on it.

I work on a project that is critical to UK infrastructure / security. We use AWS cloud which, as a European, I thought was mad from day 1. Issue is that a lot of application software is only certified to run on some cloud systems. US tech has created partnerships that are a monopoly now.

The UK πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ prime minister is the PM of all citizens and is meant to protect and look after all people despite representing one party. Your system of partisan and tribal politics just looks a recipe for civil war.

Yes it has a good GUI and easy to install packages. Guess it could be harder when you need to update drivers etc.

All this because a few billionaires thought the best return on investment is in AI, plus it would allow them and US tech to have control over society. Over a trillion dollars that could have been invested in renewables to lessen climate change.

We put Ubuntu Linux on two windows 10 laptops. Works great! All the kids need is a browser to access Netflix and Libreoffice for homework.

16.10.2025 15:55 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It’s depressing that a few billionaires decided the best returns are in AI and over a trillion $ is invested in a few US tech firms whereas for the good of the planet and society, it would be better to invest in renewables and efficient infrastructure.

I am based in the UK and took out TNT sports for cycling. It also shows US baseball and i occasionally stop 1 minute whilst zapping past it. Never realised it is so hard to score when every player is world class. I just remember lots of runs as a kid when we played softball in The Netherlands.

I was left stressing at Schiphol airport as needed to get a share code for settled status. Dover border control said it does not apply to me, but KLM still wanted me to prove that the ETA visa does not apply to me.

Fully agree, but sometimes feel that European voters would rather listen to and use US tech than trust their own politicians. If EU measures means voters don’t get their iPhone, Amazon orders or cheap Cloud access, they might rebel.

We put Linux Ubuntu on old laptops. Was easy and they now run faster than under windows 10. Like many adults, all we use the PCs for is internet browsing and Word / Excel which is the free Libreoffice for us.

In many ways the UK and UAE are complete opposites. The UK embraces arts, personal freedom and self expression. This is even compared to Europe where the state has more control. In contrast, as you say, the UAE is an authoritarian autocracy where only the rich and well connected have freedoms.

Isn’t it a lack of training places and not a lack of jobs for fully qualified doctors? Is this a cause of NHS recruitment from abroad instead of investing in more training places?
