My year 2 students are still talking about this, so I’m excited this is back. Is there a poster this year, so we can generate excitement? I can’t find one!

Question 1 has lots of parts which ask students to add, subtract or multiply polynomials from a box on the left. Question 2 says: Write down the degree of each of the polynomials in the box, and also of each of your answers to Q1. What general rules can you derive? Can you explain why these rules work?
Can you find any special cases that are exceptions to the general rules?

Spent a slightly painful 15 minutes discussing Q2 with Y12 today. The problem wasn’t with spotting the patterns, but trying to formulate that into full sentences. If you teach #ALevelMaths, I’d be interested to know how your students get on with similar β€œdescribe and explain” tasks. #MathsToday

Ooh - that’s an interesting task. I’m sure I have a class I could try that with next week. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Good morning! Does anyone have a nice graphic of the set notation symbols, including the R, N for real numbers, natural numbers, etc - I’m sure i had something, but can’t find it! #ALevelMaths

In #mathstoday #alevelmaths I did the simultaneous equations activity from the Mathematical Association Pure Mathematics Book (the one with the green cover)- it was a great first task to enable me to get to know my year 12 FM classes and get them talking and working together.

I had students do this in the summer and they have really enjoyed it. Definitely going to get some of the new cohort signed up!

Just a reminder that if you are about to start teaching #ALevelMaths, this book is available from the Mathematical Association @mathematicala.bsky.social online shop. In my completely unbiased opinion, it's really quite useful.

Definitely agreed about losing a mark…but 2 out of 5 felt harsh given how much other work was done perfectly! Clearly will be adding it to a β€˜why brackets matter’ rant!

This year for #ALevelMaths I have a weekly 30 min workshop to help students prep for entrance exams (year 13 this term, then year 12 from Jan). I’m working through the integral ODPD to prepare before term starts. Any other tips?

Same for Edexcel. I had a student 1 mark off their grade who wrote sin x ^4 instead of sin^4 x all the way through a CP1 proof. Intent was clear and every step was perfect, but they lost the first B1 and hence the final A1. Seemed harsh to lose 2 marks for poor notation.

I wish there was a means of asking for that paper to be considered in the light of the other 2 and not just relying on finding marking errors on a remark. Gutting when it costs uni places.

I’m more upset than usual for students who have just missed a grade this year, especially where this paper was the weakest link.

My answer to girls when they ask if further maths is hard is β€˜yes, but you can do hard things’. Sometimes that is all they need to hear!

The striking anomaly of repeating 3 questions in Papers 1 and 2 and the consequent omission of multiple core topics that were tested in all previous years makes the Pearson Maths A Level distinctly different and therefore "not comparable" to previous years.
