Illustration of a Florida Rat (Neotoma Floridana) from 1827, showing a detailed side view of the rodent climbing on a textured surface resembling tree bark. The rat is depicted with dense fur, long whiskers extending from its snout, a curled tail, and small clawed feet. Above the rat is a small inset drawing of a single tooth. The meticulous line work highlights the fur texture and anatomical features, characteristic of early 19th-century scientific illustrations in the class Mammalia. The rat’s eye is glossy, adding depth to the depiction. The image includes handwritten text labeling the species.

Historical illustration from "Spécies général et iconographie des coquilles vivantes" (1834-1880) showing six detailed colored depictions of porcelain shells (Cypræa). The shells are numbered and labeled with scientific names, displaying both top and side views. They feature smooth, glossy surfaces with varied patterns including spots, speckles, and solid patches in shades of brown, beige, and pink. Notable details include the elongated oval shapes, narrow slit-like openings with teeth-like ridges along the edges, and subtle color gradations highlighting shell texture. The arrangement offers a scientific study of shell varieties emphasizing morphology and ornamentation.

Plant Specimens Aren’t Flat | The Many Dimensions of Herbaria
Browsing preserved plant specimen collections to travel through history, and explore millennia of botanical experience.
Herbaria are collections of preserved plants, and have been called “plant mummies” as specimens usually turn brown, looking somewhat unappealing.
Join us at the Linnean Society on 15 May to hear from Maura Flannery about the many reasons herbaria are worth keeping.
