Widespread potential for streamflow leakage across Brazil - Nature Communications Most Brazilian rivers are found to have the potential for stream water losses into underlying aquifers, especially in drier climates, thicker aquifers, and regions with extensive groundwater pumping.

According to the author: “We analyse GW level observations from 17,972 wells across Brazil, and show that most of the Brazilian well water levels lie below nearby stream surfaces (55%), suggesting that these streamwaters will seep into the subsurface if sufficiently permeable.”
