longer version of my quote: the megacorps use AI as pretext for layoffs, but actually rooted in end of 0% interest, changes to R&D tax credit (S174, h/t @pragmaticengineer.com for their reporting), & herd mentality/labour market fixing. they want investors to believe AI is driving cost efficiency.

And, yes, AI remains cover for class war on all the workers of the world.

Is this ai revolution in the room with us right now?

Thinking of doing something similar to the ‘AI revolution’ discourse where if I say something enough it will simply be accepted as happening. Just going to say ‘Give me a brand new Skoda Superb’ again and again until it appears outside my house.

People should have to give me a dollar every time they write "we must embrace the AI revolution" and I accidentally read it.

I have had many comp-sci students who are specializing in AI in my Critical AI classes who are scandalized by the revelation of its underbelly, for eg, environmental harms, labour injustices, the effed-up TESCREAL ideologies, the baked-in surveillance. Their program feeds them pure hype.

Every time The Guardian publishes a hype article like this about AI, it's worth remembering that they have a commercial arrangement with ChatGPT and are not unbiased.

The whole thing is grifter bollocks.

I've got to embrace it, assess the risks, and take advantage of the opportunities.

If anyone thinks there's a revolution & big rush/need to get in on it,and spend a bazillion dollars and lots of water, land and energy,

They are either a fascist working for fascist plans,

or an uninformed irresponsible moron listening to bad info & being used by a sophisticated fascist movement

The terminology is important. This is LLMs, by far the most unreliable of the AI use cases and by the far the biggest contributor to the data center boom & climate damage. And this is indeed a cult.

"AI" has specialised use cases but is not useful or positive as a general/broadly used tool, or a broad workplace/business presence

The costs and outcomes of it being viewed or pushed in that way are impossible to quantify or express,and irreversible.

We must globally group in solidarity to refuse

It belongs nooooowhere near education at any level, anywhere near students, educators or parents

Its only place in education is to be the topic of comprehensive warnings, and to be put in the context of why it has appeared, who is responsible, what their goals and motives are, and how to fight them

AI today is literally not capable of replacing the senior engineers they are laying off. corps are in fact getting less done, but they're banking on making an example of enough people that survivors put their heads down and help them implement AI in exchange for keeping their jobs... for now.
