The incredible Your Party fumble will truly go down in the history books. Bless them. The Green rise is at least partly owed to the brief gasp of breath the Your Party announcement gave us.

I don’t believe electoral politics will save us, and my trust level with politicians is basically zero, but the vibe shift of a politics of hope after 15 rancid years of hate-centred politics is something worth celebrating.

In Canada and the UK, I have my entire life been told that - despite having a Parliamentary system with more than two parties - it is imperative that I “strategically vote” for the centrist losers or else the bad guys will win. Breath of fresh air to see that fall apart as @greenparty.org.uk rises.

You can’t keep squeezing unreasonable profit out at the same time that prices come down. No amount of “increased supply” will make that work.

Everyone recognizes that there’s a cost of living crisis, that rents and house prices are wildly above what is reasonable, but no one wants to acknowledge that the only way for that to change is for prices to come down and for the people at the top to make less profit.

The left needs to stop turning its nose up at religion, and also find other avenues to build in person community that feels welcoming and genuinely helps people with their day to day struggles.

Further to this point, one of the things that far right is doing successfully is creating social spaces - mostly through Evangelical churches. There’s a reason people are drawn to them and kept by them: they give you access to community in a way few other things do in a capitalist society.

Yup Dean has been talking about "avoidance" culture for the past few years and I pair it with my thinking about the "conciergification" of US culture/society. I've been thinking both ideas together for some time. [also read Morgan's thread]

All week I’ve been chewing on this and identifying the ways that, even after 20 years of community activism, this individualist mindset has taken root in me and shrunk what I imagine could be possible from the community around me.

When we live in an individual mindset, being asked to do anything for others without profit or advancement of some kind feels useless, uninteresting, or burdensome.

Capitalism thrives on the individual — it is all about one person’s success, one person’s responsibility to themself. And we see that everywhere today, as each of us is forced to become a brand, a marketable individual to survive, and anything communal is devalued and suspect.

Last week, Dean Spade talked about how we’re all being socialized into being anti-social — which is really the heart of most of our problems today — and the only way out is to push ourselves to become social again.
