Rate Limiter Pattern on DData (PNCounterMap with Sharding + Rotation) · apache pekko · Discussion #2053 I’ve been thinking of building a cluster-wide, approximate rate limiter using Pekko Distributed Data (PNCounterMap). I’ve been hacking on a design that uses Apache Pekko Distributed Data (CRDTs) to do cluster-wide rate limiting.

If Doug Lea was your favorite, you probably saw through the noise early – and that’s your edge I just want to say something to younger devs who feel out of place.

I think this might be just as important as the Split Brain Resolver which, if I remember right, also came out of academic work. I can see your Actor GC similar role for long-running, dynamic systems. Feels like one of those missing pieces we didn’t know we needed until now.

I gave a talk at PLDI '25 about the future of Actor GC in Apache Pekko - with applications to #akka #erlang and #elixir. It's the culmination of my 6+ year PhD at UIUC, and I tried to make the talk really fun and easy to follow :)

What really surprises me is how this was never a broader topic of discussion. Maybe the Akka community did talk about it somewhere, but I think many of us just assumed actors would clean themselves up by design.
