And the fucking cowardice I feel, blech. And I didn’t speak up for the trade unionists, because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

That’s the point, that’s the purpose of it. Beyond the silencing of voices - withdrawal from a social platform where I’m almost entirely passive is no great loss to the cause- it’s the weakening of an already fractured resistance, the erosion of critical thought, the elimination of dissent.

What is absolutely wild is that after three reposts of topical commentary, and a handful of new follows, I get a burst of 30ish new followers and immediately freak out- block them all, remove my name and reference to my position. It’s ridiculous: I’m a nobody, and yet I’m chilled into submission.

Replying to @indyjones1131 Right on Right Crime, Tyler Robinson, Charlie Kirk,& Brain Rot Meme Culture TikTok video by roterote

The killing of Charlie Kirk once again showed that the legacy media is deliberately ignorant of the political realities it operates in.

While they reflexivily went after trans people/the left as the perp, it's left up to tiktokkers to tell the truth

Since the budget we receive from the government directly depends on the average number of credits our students obtain each year, who is keeping us from lowering standards in the exams so we get to keep our jobs and secure our salaries?

I read this essay, "Against Cop Shit," in 2020, and it's one of the pieces of writing that has had the largest influence on my thinking about how I teach out of almost anything. It's very short - if you haven't read it, please do.

Cartoon: my favorite SHIP dynamic: Degrammaticalization.
Two figures, one big, with broad shoulders, smiling and reaching out to the other figure. The second figure is smaller and turning away.
The first figure is described as follows:

Noun: independent,
strong, always there to provide a safe haven for suffix

The second figure is described as follows:

Ship: used to depend a Lot on Noun, now starting to do their own thing

Bilingualism Makes the Brain More Efficient Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to build connections within itself, adapting to the surrounding environment. The brain is most plastic in childhood, forming new pathways in reaction to stimuli such as language. Past research has shown that learning a second language may positively affect attention, healthy aging, and even recovery after brain injury. A new study from the Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) of McGill University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Zaragoza in Spain elaborates on bilingualism’s role in cognition, showing increased efficiency of communication between brain regions. Scientists recruited 151 participants who either spoke French, English, or

Language is Not the Problem, Racism is the Problem – Demystifying Language Project Students of color are always being told that they need to change the way they speak. But what if, instead, educators changed the way they listen?

Jonathan Rosa and I had the amazing opportunity to work with an undergraduate student and a high school student to "translate" our "Undoing Appropriateness" article for high school students. The final product is available for free here:

Being a linguist is inherently political. We know that all language is equal and that being treated differently because of your languaging has to do with the body you inhabit and not the language itself.
