π¨π§΅on Venezuela
While the final US military operation last weekend might have been under cover of darkness, the build-up to it was out in the open for all to see.
I've constructed some timelines of the immediate build-up covering both the strikes and the supporting actions...

Two archaeologists in hi vis vests stand before a circular gulley, probably the outer wall of a roundhouse. Behind, a third archaeologist waves
At the SE edge of the #Durotriges25 trench, Amanda and Steve seem to have found a roundhouse !!
They are happy (as is Holly) π

A mosaic of three naked cupids playing on the left, with plant fronds in their hands and shadows stretching out to the left. On the right Venus reclines mostly nude on a rock with arm outstretched towards them
#MosaicMonday 3 cupids playing as Venus watches, 2nd Century AD from Utica, Tunisia, now in the Bardo Museum
Curiously it uses very large and very few tesserae, so appears almost 'pixellated'. It's also an uncommon example of its subjects casting shadows

In the final episode of the latest Digging for Britain series, I visited John Henry Phillips as he led excavations at a 1960βs-70s βGipsy Rehabilitation Centreβ in the New Forest. An exhibition linked to the dig will opens this Friday:

Okay. Iβve written 800 words for @theconversation.com on why archaeologists arenβt shocked or baffled by the evidence for matrilineal descent in Late Iron Age Dorset.

A large conch shell with flint stones in a museums display
A #Neolithic conch shell horn (charonia nodifera) found in Γsel, Lower Saxony, dating 5300-4900 BC - the oldest known musical instrument in this region. It's an evidence of early contacts with the Mediterranean region.
The shell was found filled with flint tools in a settlement pit.

Part of a 3rd century AD Roman mosaic floor from London depicting the god Bacchus reclining on the back of a tiger
Bacchus, the #Roman god of wine, having had a drink or 10 (and naked apart from socks and a cloak) gets a lift home on a tiger
Discovered in Leadenhall Street #London in 1803, this central panel of a 3rd century mosaic was given to the British Museum in 1880
