Starting my second localization project today!
The first one brought a lot of joy and surprise, but also made me realize the responsibility that comes with translation.

I get the concern about machine translation—some clients have asked me to explain how my work differs, so I’ve shared notes on why I chose certain phrasings or left terms in English. I think being transparent really helps!

As for pricing, it can vary quite a bit. For Japanese-to-English or English-to-Japanese, I’ve seen rates around $0.04 to $0.10 USD per word, with companies often paying on the higher end of that range.

I'm still relatively new to game localization, but I do offer translation myself. That said, I’m not too familiar with other places to look for translators, so I’m sorry I can’t be of more help there.

I’m working on a short post about how human translation can sound more natural than machine translation—especially in character naming and forms of address.
I hope it helps more people see the value of human nuance in localization!
