8 takeaways from a so-so Emmys night The Studio, The Pitt and Adolescence took home top prizes on Sunday. And while the wins were deserving, the telecast was meh. Here are a few takeaways from a night that was a real mixed bag.

Such lovely winners, such good shows, such an ineptly done telecast. It might be one of the worst-executed awards shows I’ve covered, and I’ve been covering them for almost 20 years.

My standup comedian friend would make a differentiation between the two as standups. Mulaney does standup, but Barzgate is a standup comedian.. he has explained it before and he’s a close homie but alas, I had to tune out the ‘splaining.

Mourning the loss of Linda Williams. It’s hard to think of another scholar whose work helped define such a diverse range of subfields. For me, her 1981 essay “Film Body: An Implantation of Perversions” was a beacon showing how fundamental feminist analysis could be for early cinema. RIP
