I think there’s a culture of laissez-faire capitalism, opportunism and rugged individualism that provides an environment in which anything goes and politicians are implicitly trusted. Rarely challenged. That allows the cultivation of corruption.

Underneath all of this is the corruption of human interaction and community that comes from the mindless embrace of capitalism as the one true way. America's brand of unbounded capitalism has corrupted even culture, society, the world. For example, the Project for a New American Century.

Other forms of corruption go beyond the influence of money. A whole other subject is the corruption of information, in our post-truth era. Social media didn't create it, but accelerated it. I think that corruption in politics came first, normalizing the corruption of rationality, morality and truth.
