Still thinking about when a student I had recently wrote a whole essay response about how women "suffered" (from "suffrage") before the passage of the 19th amendment, and how quick i was to think at least they didnt use chatgpt for their answer

Hard power and soft power are actually the same thing, their relative influence kinda just depends on vibes

The point is that in the OP thread many people are citing Elvis and James Dean as the projection of American hegemony, because Chuck Berry or Miles or Nina Simone or James Baldwin or whoever take your pick could not be the face of America for reasons we likely agree

And when it has been, it has only been because it was profitable to be so

Yea. But the global projection of America is not Black.

In most cases it has been America's theft from Black people in nearly every category that was influential, and somehow this theft has never stifled still new (yet to be stolen) cultural innovations

Our current trade policy is a mashup of high school (third attempt) cafeteria politics, ISI dom fetish, and "here's a dollar go buy yourself a star war"

Grading likely-AI papers is a constant mental battle between "I'm offended that this student thinks (wrongly) that I'm an idiot and that they are benefitting themselves" and "I am sorry but it is above me now, I cannot care that the students are doing this and in fact Higher Ed ensures that they do"

One way to judge a society's investments is asking: "what kinds of people and relationships will this investment create?" Sit with this question. Investment in repressive bureaucracies has become so normalized that we are desensitized to how far away from the best parts of humanity it takes us.

As the negotiations over DHS budget continue, please remember: the ICE detention budget alone was exploded in 2025 so it is now 62% greater than the entire Bureau of Prisons. People are not clocking what this infusion of cash to build concentration camps will do to our society.

What can you do? If you’re in higher ed, no matter what your position, join a union. If you don’t have one, join the AAUP and try to build a union on your campus. Write publicly, and do not let these scumbags scare you. Silence is what they hope to produce. They want us scared. Thankfully we’re not.

Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich
