CA should be throwing every transportation dollar it's got at the spectacularly efficient and effective BART system to maximize ridership!
If I have to hear our City Traffic Engineer talk about stop sign warrants one more time Iβm gonna scream.
Since Aug, 3 middle schoolers have been hit on a bike boulevard next to school but because people donβt always stop at stops signs, itβs better to leave things as the speed-inducing status quo.
Crystal clear.

Well said, re: tariffs and car prices. This is not a win in any way.
04.03.2025 22:52 β π 17 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0βThese poll resultsβ¦should end the debate over who is the narrow interest group. People who want safe streets for everyoneβ¦are the clear majority. Anti-safety, anti-bike-lane advocates are a small marginal group who want to protect their own self-interest at the expense of vulnerable street users.β

01.03.2025 15:38 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Happening tonight!!! For BUSD families only!
26.02.2025 01:37 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0This is a topic I have tried to push for years. Kids have a right to move around on our roads exactly the same as licensed drivers. You don't need a licenses to ride your bike in the street and yet cities do little to protect youth who need to use our roads.
21.02.2025 16:56 β π 62 π 8 π¬ 0 π 0My entire career, I've heard street safety advocates say they wish America took car crashes as seriously as plane crashes. Wrote about how that conversation needs to shift as deregulation and defunding comes for air travel, too, and why government trust is an overlooked component of "safe systems."
19.02.2025 19:32 β π 54 π 17 π¬ 2 π 3Yeah, I think you can argue that basing a speed limit on the 85th when so few vehicles were measured means youβre very unlikely to be getting the true 85th (huge margin of error). If true 85th were a few mph lower (27.4 instead of 31), you could lower to 20 based on AB43 given schools and park.
17.02.2025 22:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I guess Iβd just say that, since the speed limit based on this E&TS wouldnβt stand up in court, Iβd also just encourage setting at 20 or 25 and not enforce it. You can do that - just put up the speed limit you want and donβt bother enforcing it. Youβll still get some effect.
17.02.2025 21:16 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This E&TS would not stand up in court. The CA Manual on Speed Limit Setting states βIn no case should the sample contain less than 50 vehicles.β Iβd recommend city engineers request a change in functional classification of this road from collector to local, then set the speed limit as they choose.
17.02.2025 20:29 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 3 π 0Hey Berkeleyans! Does your kid bike to school? Do you wish they could but don't feel it's safe enough?
Thereβs a BUSD-specific listening session on the Bike Plan update: Tue 2/25, 6:30-8:30pm at King! Would be great to get input from families on how Berkeley can make it safer to bike to school.
I know things are going downhill quick but I lack a sufficiently deep understanding of both US history & how other authoritarian governments operate to grasp whatβs coming.
This article was a really helpful read in providing that context. Highly recommend.
