Wrestling with choosing between two partially developed projects today and finally just asked: assuming neither will be published, which would you have more fun writing?
Problem solved. High fantasy it is!
I have detailed outlines with index card notes paperclipped to them!
Outlining is one of my favorite parts of writing, you can make endless changes without having to do revisions (yet)
Just did a Wolfe comfort read myself.

I’m no fan of Ender’s Game, but don’t remember being turned off by the training section. For fantasy, Wizard of Earthsea & Riddlemaster of Hed come to mind. Might not be the length as much as the content?
