Also the book, The Last Human, was ABSOLUTELY the way original Hologram Rimmer should have been written out instead of still being a buffoon in Stoke Me A Clipper whom you know is not going to last more than thirty minutes after the episode ends.

Me neither. Kochanski changed the group dynamic for the worse. Lister became unikeable, Kryten jealous and resentful, Cat was just *there* and Kochanski reinforced the sense that nobody was having any 'fun' any more. The one big cheer series 7 got was when Norman Lovett got to say his catchphrase.

But there was a limit to how far you could take that and two seasons was already starting to show the stretch. The show had to expand and evolve, even if it meant ultimately becoming the very thing it was there to subvert in the first place.

The best seasons are the first two, when it was pure character-driven 'two flatmates who hate each other' sitcom, and the sci-fi tropes and trappings were either incidental or whole episodes were devoted to utterly subverting them.
