During an interview at E3 1997, Benimaru Itoh stated EarthBound 64 was once planned support multiplayer. However, it was scrapped early on due to technical complications. There is nothing viewable of this multiplayer build of the game online.

It's wild to me that Benimaru Itoh and Toshinao Aoki didn't even get a special thanks credit in the final cut of Mother 3. Even if you despise how the N64 version looked, they still arguably laid vital groundwork for what the character and enemy designs would evolve into.

Back sometime around 2012, Nintendo World NY had on display, among lots of merchandise for other Nintendo franchises, some MOTHER series items, including some fan merch. Allegedly, this was from an employee's personal collection, that the other staff allowed for them to temporarily put on display.

No need to apologise. I hope I've gave some food for thought regarding this hypothetical.

I'm certain that had the game come out, it would have inspired countless indie games in the years following, too. That metric is kind of difficult to judge I feel because we can't know how differently things would be if GBA Mother 3 never existed…

I feel like the argument can go either way… the N64 version allowed for a dynamic camera in cutscenes, GBA only had a fixed camera. Also the music fidelity was better on 64, due to the more powerful hardware than the GBA.

…into EarthBound 64, research it a lot & everything, to really understand the appeal of why someone might have preferred that version. For me, it's far too complicated to digestibly put into words in only a couple of posts.
(No slight intended against you OP, just an observation about M3 I've made)

In all seriousness though: I feel like this will always be a bit of an unfair debate in the sense that, most are going to be biased to the version of the game they can actively play now and don't only have a limited amount of images to look at and judge from there. You kinda need to really look…

Make it a worldwide release rather than JPN and US only, and I'm in.

I've been playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl a lot lately. I know this isn't a ground breaking revelation, but the single-player content it has makes me more inclined to play it these days over something like Smash Ultimate. I'm getting pretty close to beating every challenge the game has.
