A potted lemon tree in full splendor, laden with plump, sun-yellow fruits at the peak of ripeness alongside a lone green sphere still maturing, would have been the envy of every 18th-century royal court in Europe.
The photograph captures a compact citrus tree bowing under the weight of its harvest. Three large, deeply golden lemons crowd a single branch at the center, their textured rinds glowing with an almost luminous warmth. Tucked among dark, waxy leaves in the upper left hangs a solitary unripe fruit, still a vivid chartreuse, a quiet reminder that nature moves at its own pace. The whole composition radiates Mediterranean abundance, a still life that could have stepped straight out of a Baroque painting.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, owning a living citrus tree was one of the most extravagant status symbols imaginable. Citrus was considered a near-medicinal luxury, its vitamin C revered and its fruit effectively reserved for royalty and the highest nobility. Louis XIV famously displayed his orange trees in solid silver tubs throughout the state rooms at Versailles, eventually amassing the largest collection in Europe by sourcing specimens from Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Lemon trees held an equally prized place in these grand collections. At Hampton Court, King William III and Queen Mary’s extraordinary exotic plant collection included citrus species transported from their Dutch palaces and sourced through the Dutch East India Company. The Zwinger Palace orangery in Dresden began as a showcase for exactly such coveted citrus trees before evolving into a grand court venue.

Baroque garden owners displayed potted specimens in elaborate β€œplant theatres,” competing to outshine one another with the rarity and beauty of their living collections. A tree simultaneously bearing unripe green fruits and fully golden ripe lemons was living proof of a gardener’s mastery, something that would have drawn gasps of admiration at any 18th-century royal gathering.

Once the ultimate royal status symbol, citrus trees graced the silver-tub orangeries of Versailles & the palace gardens of Europe’s elite. Today, this sun-drenched lemon tree, ripe gold meets unripe green, proves that some fashions never fade.

Measuring roughly 1/4 inch long (.6 cm, about the size of a match head), with an oblong, oval shape, similar to a tiny, elongated ladybug, but yellow-green, with three distinct, dark, longitudinal stripes running down their back (the wing covers, or elytra) from the head to the tail. They also have a dark, vertical stripe in the center of their head and a dark spot on the plate just behind their head (the pronotum). Shown holding onto small greenery, against out of focus green background.

Photograph taken at the Arts & Crafts wonder of Blackwell House overlooking Lake Windermere in Cumbria. The sizeable grand house was designed by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott in 1900. This is the fireplace in the 'White Drawing Room' (my favourite room in the house). Elsewhere in the room are window seats overlooking the ground, lake and hills beyond, where you can sit and read or relax.

Image shows a predominantly white painted room with a grey and white marble geometric tiles hearth with pink accents. The fireplace itself has deep blue glazed tiles and nestles within a clever wooden surround with in-built bookshelves and benches, illuminated display cases and mirrors. Above this is an intricately carved repeating frieze (see post I of II) of vines and grapes, also painted white. On the shelves and in the display cases are a selection of books and ceramic bowls. There are subtle moments of up lighting that really lift and highlight the craftsmanship.

For further information and details on how to visit this fantastic place, their website is: www.blackwell.org.uk

Be warned, their gift shop is great too and hard to leave without a treat or two.
