This newly-discovered species is being called the “death-ball sponge” for its appendages, which end in orbs and are covered in micro-hooks meant to capture prey."

Me, explaining copyright as a librarian:
In 1976, copyright protection became automatic. Registration was no longer required in order to retain your copyright to the work.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.
While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

A generous thread that touches on a lot of the conversations that are obviated when "Gen AI" is presented as a monolith rather than a marketing term whose nuances need to be teased out in order to have curious, productive conversations.

Chalk. That's the big threat here at OSU. I can't think of a more obvious way to say "we're afraid of what you have to say" than to ban chalk.

I’ve noticed an uptick in dismissals of the concerns of teachers about AI. Some say that it’s *their* job to find a way to evaluate work that AI can’t replicate. I would just ask that you talk to real teachers and really listen. I’d also suggest reading a bit about writing and the brain.

"If putting these words together, DEI, is somehow offensive... does that mean our policy is homogeneity, inequity, and exclusion?
Are you going to stand there and tell me that's now the policy of the NIH?"

Reddit Issuing 'Formal Legal Demands' Against Researchers Who Conducted Secret AI Experiment on Users
Reddit called it an "improper and highly unethical experiment" and said it did not know it was happening.
Update: Reddit the platform is considering legal action against the researchers, their university has stated that their ethics review did NOT actually tell them that the research was okay, and the researchers are not publishing the work. www.404media.co/reddit-issui...

This is one of the worst violations of research ethics I've ever seen. Manipulating people in online communities using deception, without consent, is not "low risk" and, as evidenced by the discourse in this Reddit post, resulted in harm.
Great thread from Sarah, and I have additional thoughts. 🧵
